European Stork Village 2013 in Macedonia
Ceremony of confering the titel of European Stork Village 2013
On 23 May 2013, the Mayor of Cheshinovo-Obleshevo, Macedonia, received the title of European Stork Village 2013 on behalf of the village from Mr Gabriel Schwaderer, Executive Director of EuroNatur.
Schoolchildren, local residents, representatives of the municipality, members of the Macedonian Ecological Society and the media all took part in the ceremony, which was held in Strasho Pindzur Primary School in Cheshinovo. The schoolchildren also contributed drawings and poems inspired by the storks they see every day. Being granted this honour is the first step towards the implementation of a programme for the conservation of the local stork population.
This municipality in Macedonia has one of the largest populations of White Storks, with over 70 nests built on roofs and electrical pylons. This fact and the very friendly attitude of local people to these magnificent birds were the main reasons this municipality was chosen for the title of European Stork Village. Additionally, Cheshinovo boasts the largest stork nest in Macedonia.
The municipality has outstanding nesting conditions, particularly since the extensive rice fields surrounding it provide feeding grounds for the storks. Additionally, the local population cares for the birds by monitoring their state and lending a helping hand whenever needed.
We wish all the best the Stork Village and its heros!
