Spring is for birds the time of nest building. We can help them by preparing for them places in our gardens, in the area near our house, where it will be easier for them to build a nest. For birds nesting in tree holes like tits or starlings, we can build a nest box. It is important to remember about the safety of its future dwellers. It has to be put in a place which is out of reach of cats, other small predators and people. The diameter of the entry hole for small birds should be 3.3 cm, while the entrance for starlings should reach 4.7 cm in diameter. Please, notice that some nest boxes sold in the supermarkets and shops with gardening equipment are too flat, with too big entry holes. They may not give birds they chicks and eggs proper protection. As tree holes are far better for birds than nesting boxes, it is good to keep old trees in our gardens, that are of no use to us. They will be a wonderful gift for birds! Birds also like to place their nests in thick bushes. Thus, by planting shrubs around our houses, we provide birds with great opportunities for settling. Birds can also use tick hedge to build there nests. The more varied are the bushes and shrubs we have planted in our garden, the more bird species we may expect to nest in it. There will be place for everybody and birds will not disturb each other. Another good thing we can do for birds living in our gardens is limiting use of pesticides. Chicks are fed on insects, mostly soft larvae. It is much healthier and safer for them if the larvaes did not die of poisoning. Moreover if we allow birds to nest peacefully in our garden, they will help us protect plants from insects. Birds will also appreciate if we plant for them some fruit bushes like hawthorn or witchwood. They will be happy to return to our garden every spring.
