Son muchas las aves que anidan en agujeros. Pero los métodos de agricultura modernos y los problemas de seguridad en las ciudades, significan que hay menos árboles viejos con huecos donde las aves pueden hacer sus nidos. Además, en comparación con los edificios antiguos, las viviendas nuevas son menos propensas a tener espacios alrededor de sus techos por lo que las aves como los vencejos y los gorriones lo tienen más difícil para criar.
Las cajas nido son excelentes sustitutos. Se conocen más de 60 especies de aves que las utilizan regularmente: Trepadores azules, carboneros, herrerillos, gorriones molineros, estorninos, papamoscas, petirrojos, aviones, golondrinas, vencejos, cernícalos y cárabos son algunos ejemplos de estas especies.
